Uranium is a relatively common element that is found in the earth all over the world, mined in many countries and processed into yellow cake, that is, uranium oxide (U 3 O 8).Uranium oxide has to be processed before it can be used as fuel for a nuclear reactor, where electricity is generated to produce heat and steam in order to drive a turbine connected to a generator.
The Olympic Dam is a huge mining centre located in South Australia, 560km north-west of Adelaide. Home to a major oxide copper gold deposit producing copper, uranium, gold and silver, the site hosts an underground mine and an integrated metallurgical processing plant. The project was opened in 1988 by WMC Resources, after discovering the large ...
Uranium Mining55 Кб. Uranium mining Most uranium mining utilizes conventional open pit, or underground methods depending on the location and quality of the ore.In this case uranium is released from rock into the ground water using a solvent, and then pumped to the surface.

The nuclear fuel cycle: industrial processes which involve the production of electricity from uranium in nuclear power reactors. Electricity is created by using the heat generated in a nuclear reactor to produce steam and drive a turbine connected to a generator. Fuel removed from a reactor, after it has reached the end of its useful life, can be reprocessed to produce new fuel.
This is a flow chart from mining to conversion, enrichment, fuel fabrication, and storage. It starts when Uranium ore is mined. Uranium ore is then milled into yellowcake. Yellowcake is turned into UO2 and then a gas, UF6. Gas is enriched to increase the amount of U-235. Enriched UF6 is converted back to UO2 and made into ceramic fuel pellets.
The process of mining project development can be complex. It can be confusing when viewed through the eyes of an outsider or beginner to the industry. We created this flowchart with the goal of helping those who would like to get a better understanding of the mining process.

The mining of uranium . Uranium is found in small amounts in most rocks, and even in seawater. Uranium mines operate in many countries, but more than 85% of uranium is produced in six countries: Kazakhstan, Canada, Australia, Namibia, Niger, and Russia. Historically, conventional mines (e.g. open pit or underground) were the main source of uranium.
